Wilayah Persekutuan sweeps Masters
17th June, Melaka: Top seed Syimir Abdul Razak and fifth seed Nur Umirah swept the two final gold medals of the SUKMA XIII 2010 Tenpin Bowling Championship for Wilayah Persekutuan with victories in the Boy's and Girl's Masters.

Syimir Abdul Razak, who topped the earlier Round of 16 finals by a single pin over Sarawak's Jonathan Ding, sailed through the best-of-3 quarter-finals against eighth seed, Dinie Faliq of Melaka, 2-0.

But Syimir was stretched into a third and deciding game in the semi-finals against sixth seed, Muhd Aizudeen Mustaqim of Selangor, winning by a single pin. The KL youth lost the first game, 232-256 bur bounced back with 257-189 in the second.

In the deciding game, Syimir edged his opponent, 237-236 to book his place in the finals and a 2-1 win. Second seed, Jonathan Ding of Sarawak also sailed through the quarter-finals after beating No. 7 seed, Syed Muzaffar of Pahang, 2-0.

Like Syimir, Jonathan had to work harder in the semi after going to the third and deciding game against No. 5 seed, Khairul Diaz Din of Johor with a 2-1 win to advance to the finals.

The top seed again started with a 198-202 lost against Jonathan but recovered trashing the Sarawkian, 246-179. It was probably one of the closest game of the finals when Syimir again took a one-pin victory, 259-258 to clinch the gold medal, 2-1.

Meanwhile, No. 5 seed, Nur Umirah upset favourite and national backup squad member, Fatin Syazliana with a 2-1 victory in the Girl's Masters final match to give Wilayah Persekutuan the two final gold medals of the championship.

Fatin, who took the first game, 212-185 was denied Penang's chance to win their first gold when No. 8 seed lost to Nur Umirah, 202-245 and 175-196 in the remaining games. Fatin advance to the finals after beating No. 2 seed, Radin Nur Najwa of WP, 2-0 in the first semi.

Nur Umirah booked her place in the finals with victory over No. 3 seed, Siti Shazwani of Johor, 2-0 before causing the upset. The champion also upset All Events gold medalist, Jacqueline J. Sijore of Sarawak by defeating her 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

Fatin, who settled for the silver medal, ousted top seed, Nazrinnah Mohd Kamil of Perak, 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Radin and Siti Shazwani both took home a bronze medal each as losing semi-finalists.

Sarawak and Wilayah Persekutuan claimed all the limelights at this year's championship. Sarawak's boys had a medal haul of 4-2-2 to emerge as champion with arch rival, Wilyaha Persekutuan claiming second with 1-1-0.

Wilayah however went away as champion of the girl's division with a haul of 3-4-1 while Sarawak finished second with 3-1-0 despite winning the same amount of gold. Undoubtedly, Sarawak were deserving overall champions.

Both the boys and girls won a total of 7 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals in probably their best-ever championship in the SUKMA history. Wilayah finished second with a medal haul of 4-5-1. Selangor and Negeri Sembilan were the only two other states which have won a gold medal. Selangor's Muhd Aizudeen won the Boy's Singles gold while Negeri Sembilan took the gold in the Mixed Doubles.

Wilayah Persekutuan denied Sarawak another dominating performance and their sixth gold medal after Chong Pui Yee, Hee Kar Yen, Nur Diana Hussin, Nur Umirah and perfect gamer, Radin Nur Najwa shot 1101 in their last game to clinch the gold.

Wilayah Persekutuan, who led the first block, was trailing leader, Sarawak by 164 pins and 5 pins from second-placed Pahang going into the last game to win their second gold with 5904. Sarawak handed the gold to their opponent after managing only 867 to end with 5834.

Pahang did well to edge Selangor in fourth place by 34 pins to take home the bronze medal with 5777, 70 pins from Pahang and 127 pins from the champion, Wilayah Persekutuan.

Radin Nur Najwa rolled the championship's first perfect 300 en-route to capturing the Girl's Singles gold and silver.
Fatin Azmira of Perak, kicked off the championship with a cracking opening game of 257 to lead Radin Nur Najwa of Wilayah Persekutuan by 9 pins where no fewer than 30 girls posted scors above 200.

Radin, who shot 248 in the first game, followed it up with another superb 256 to take over the lead followed by Negeri Sembilan's Hurul Ainul in second after the latter rolled 225 and 257.

The Melaka International Bowling Centre was silenced as Radin stepped up to take he 12th shot after she had downed eleven consecutive strikes in the third game. She delivered a perfect shot to become the first bowler to score a perfect game on opening day.

Radin continued with her hot pace to end the 6-game event with a record-breaking 1499 to claim the first gold medal of tenpin bowling at the games. Her team-mate, Hee Kar Yen, gave Wilayah Persekutuan a one-two finish to take the silver medal with 1430.

National backup squad member, Fatin Syazliana of Pulau Pinang stormed home to clinch the bronze medal with 1394 with another backup squad member, Jacqueline Je. Sijore of Sarawak missing the podium to finish fourth with 1392.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Aizudeen Mustaqim won Selangor's first gold medal after posting 1399 in the Boy's Singles event. Sarawak's Chong Jun Foo settled for the silver medal just 9 pins away on 1390.

Asian Youth Team gold medalist, Khoo Beng Khai of Pulau Pinang took the silver medal another 9 pins further on 1381 while Sarawak's Bong Kihow missed the podium by six pins to finish fourth.

The bowlers will resume with their doubles event tomorrow. Four more events - the Mixed Doubles, Trios, Team and Masters events will be contested in this year's championship.
